The Geoscience Division is one of the technical arms of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development, established in () to administer prospecting, exploration and mining of non living resources in Kiribati.

Key Result Area 1: Ministry Infrastructure and Enabling Environment
  • KSA 1.2 Develop, adopt, and implement ocean resources and fisheries policies, legislation, robust plans, and governance frameworks

  • KSA 1.6 Create an enabling environment for GEDSI mainstreaming through enhanced policy and by building GEDSI capacity.

Inshore Unit

  • Establishment of Kiribati Maritime Boundaries and Extended Continental Shelf Claim


  • Coordinate Marine Spatial Planning in Kiribati through the KMSPCC.

  • House, maintain and update a Centralized Ocean Spatial Database - “Te Baiku Database” 


  • Coastal Zone Management through coastal assessments, surveys and mapping.

  • Resource assessments for innovation, research and responsible development

  • Foster partnerships for research, innovation, data acquisition, technology transfer and development opportunities

Offshore Unit

  • Mandated to administer the responsible development of deep seabed minerals

  • Lead ocean science and policy integration and coordination

  • Administer Marine Scientific Research Activities and data accessibility

  • Promote capacity building and participation in marine scientific research activities

  • Ensure protection of the marine environment in the development of ocean resources

  • Diversification of economic base through Deep Seabed Minerals and Marine Genetic Resources

  • Exploring the viability of deep ocean resources

  • Sponsor Marawa Research and Exploration Limited to conduct exploration activities in the Area
